It is very common that newborns may cry frequently or have trouble during sleeping. New parents are often clueless about what is wrong and what to do to soothe their babies. Swaddling is an age-old practice which can be tried to calm a crying newborn. In simple words, swaddling is the technique of wrapping a baby cozily thereby giving a womb-like sensation to the little one. Swaddling is different from simple wrapping in terms of the tightness and closeness it provides. You must know how to swaddle your baby to do it effectively.
According to www.healthline.com, a calm and happy baby reduces the anxiety of new moms to a great extent. Swaddling plays a great role in calming down a fuzzy baby. The benefits of swaddling are many. Let us see them one by one in detail.
Undisturbed and peaceful sleep
Sleeplessness and disturbed sleep during nights is the most common complaint among parents of newborns. Most often, it is due to your baby finding it difficult to adjust to the new surroundings. Swaddling is very effective in reducing the startle reflex in newborns which is one of the reasons which disturbs their sleep. When done rightly, it gives the babies a feeling of security and comfort which they enjoyed in their mother’s’ womb.
The point to take care while putting a swaddled baby to sleep is that he should be placed on his back and never ever on his stomach. The latter has the risk of suffocation and should be avoided strictly.
Calms down the little ones
The feeling of security that swaddling provides not only leads to undisturbed sleep, but it also causes better neurobehavioral pattern in infants. Studies have proved that swaddled infants have lesser anxiety and nervousness compared to the non-swaddled ones. Less anxiety could be the reason why swaddled babies cry very less.
Reduces parental anxiety
When the anxiety, crying, and fussiness of newborns are reduced, and they are not upset anymore, it is natural that parental anxiety is also reduced considerably. Scientific research has proved lesser maternal anxiety in mothers who swaddle their newborns. In short, swaddling leads to overall parental satisfaction.
A word of caution!!
Swaddling is extremely advantageous, but strict care has to be taken to do it rightly. Swaddling keeps a baby warm if done using the right cloth. A breathable and thin blanket should be used. Otherwise, it raises the temperature of the baby and may lead to SIDS in worst cases. So care should be taken about the blanket.
Swaddling should be done in such a way that the cloth is firmly wrapped around the baby’s torso, but should not be very tight around the hips and knees. Firmly tightening the hips and knees thereby restricting complete motion may lead to hip dysplasia. So take care!
Lastly, swaddling should not be done after two months of age or so because this is generally the time when babies start to roll over. So, it is wise to stop swaddling by this time as restricting their movements beyond this age would do more harm than good.
